Space Coast Spina Bifida Support Group Mission Statement & Services

The Space Coast Spina Bifida Support Group was formed by a group of parents in 1982. Our mission is twofold: to provide information and support to individuals and families affected by Spina Bifida in Brevard and Indian River Counties, and to promote public awareness of Spina Bifida and how it can be prevented.

The Support Group serves persons with any form of Spina Bifida, including Spina Bifida occulta, myelomeningocele, and lipomylomeningocele and their families. Interested parties in the medical or professional fields are also welcome to join the organization.

We provide individuals and families within Brevard and Indian River Counties with an information and referral service about medical, educational and legislative issues that may affect them. We maintain a lending library with books, videos, audiotapes and catalogs that our members can check out at any time. We also offer advocacy services to our members for dealing with schools and government agencies.

The organization offers emotional support and recreational activities for individuals with Spina Bifida and their families.

A very important service provided by our organization is the family fund. The family fund is for expenses related to Spina Bifida- it covers recreation, education, travel expenses, & medical bills not covered by insurance. We currently can offer our families up to $200 annually per client in family funds, although we would like to be able to do more in the future.

The Space Coast Spina Bifida Support Group promotes public awareness throughout Brevard and surrounding counties on the cause and prevention of Spina Bifida, attending local health fairs, where we provide information about Spina Bifida and what can be done to help prevent it. We provide information about folic acid, which has been determined to be an effective preventative measure against Spina Bifida.

The Space Coast Spina Bifida Support Group is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. All funds collected stay with our organization. We do not use any professional fundraisers or pay anyone to fund raise for us.
